Okay, here we go.
I'm probably going to piss off a lot of y'all with this...
Mimato fans are generally regarded as ‘the scourge amongst the shippers’. Since
we’re seen as the most improbable coupling, yet one of the most popular, we’re
constantly getting shat on by other factions due to our lack of evidence, our
“shallowness”, and our reputations as, well, cruel Digi-bitches, due to a substantial
amount of Sora-bashing amongst our ranks. (Myself included, occasionally. Sorry,
but Ep. 50 pushed me over the edge.) Nor are some of us (you know who
you are) any too kind to other shipper groups, because we've somehow firmly
convinced ourselves that we're in the right and they're in the wrong. Hell,
we earned the title of bitch!
But just the same, we put up with snubs from smug Sorato fans, holier-than-thou
Jyoumi fans who gloat that they have more ‘evidence’ than we do, and that lovable
Taito Mafia, who dismisses anything non-yaoi as being hackneyed and lame. (Okay,
okay, I shouldn't generalize; they're not all like that. o.o) The Michi
and Mishiro camps are fairly innocent; in fact, I’ve noticed a lot of Mimato
fans are Michi fans as well. (It’s that evil geometry at work again.) As for
Mishiro, I have read one or two cute Mishiro fics, but after “A Clue from the
Digi-Past”, I can’t envision those two as a loving couple. I can just see adult
Izzy waving away an impatient negligee-clad Mimi while he downloads more Asuka
Langley hentai.
I’m not against any of these couplings (well, okay, but Sorato just...offends
me. And don't even get me started on Junato), it’s just mostly annoying to visit
a couple shrine pointing out why THIS couple is the be-all and end-all; it’s
the RIGHT one, you should love it, and if not then you’re just an idiot, blah
blah blah. Fuck that. If you want to support Sorato, go right on ahead; I can’t
stop you, nor do I have any desire to. I don't care about converting you, either.
We’re all individuals. Sure, our differences spark the occasional message-board
catfight, but they make us the unique Digi-bitches we are! Just don’t go around
trumpeting about how everyone who ships differently from you is a moron or delusional,
n'kay? You're wasting your breath.
But back to the original issue. Is it shallow to pair up the show’s überbishounen
and bishoujo, solely because they ‘look good together’? Or cliché to
pair up your two favorite male/female characters, though they have nearly NO
interaction at all throughout the series? Why yes, it is! And I, being
a shallow and clichéd individual, support this doomed couple wholeheartedly.
No, purists, I don’t CARE that Toei never intended them to have any sort of
relationship; we’ve already more or less determined that Toei’s entire writing
staff was on crack, or at least very bad weed (how else could they have churned
out the flaming dung heap that was the infamous Ep. 50?).
So I happen to like Mimi and Matt together as a couple. Granted, I'm sure the
fact that they are "soooo kawaii together" has a lot to do with it.
Then again, maybe it's one of those weird personal-issue-things, like my support
of H/H (you can read about that at my HP
site if you feel so inclined). I identify with Mimito a point.
Rather, me at age thirteen identified with her. I was whiny, completely materialistic
and image-obsessed, and for two months had hot-pink hair. Then I moved and became
poor and got angsty and wasn't really like her anymore, but when I first began
watching Digimon, I grew a nostalgic kind of affinity towards that 'whining
little snot in the cowgirl hat'. As for what this has to do with liking Mimato,
well, I'm a Matt fangirl. It's hard to resist that guy. He embodies 'horn'.
So, whamput the two together, it's got that guilty-self-insertion-pleasure
thing going on. Is this why I like it? Very possibly. But I don't need
a reason. I can just like them for the hell of it.
No coupling is WRONG, whether it be het, yaoi, or yuri (though if it's Taikari
or Yamakeru, I think it's just sick). It's all a matter of personal preference.
Mine is bound to be different than yours. Which doesn't mean you have to slam
me for liking it. You know what they say; opinions are like assholes. ^_~
So, in conclusion...er...well, there was really no point to this. I guess I
just wanted to say I like Mimato, so feck off. I AM allowed to. Sure, they’ll
never happen. And maybe any attraction between the two would be merely physical,
and their similarly high-maintenance personalities would make for an unhealthy
combination...
But I still think their offspring would be cuter than Sorato’s.
